Getting started
Universal Asset Library (UAL) has two editions. Pick the one that matches your DCC.
The two editions
| Edition | Where it lives | License |
|---|---|---|
| Blender | View3D → Sidebar (N) → UAL | GPL-3.0-or-later |
| Houdini | Dockable panel + shelf tab Asset Library | Proprietary / commercial |
Both browse local library folders, search online sources, save downloads into your library, and import meshes, materials, and HDRIs.
First 10 minutes
- Install your edition — Blender install or Houdini install
- Add at least one library folder (permanent assets)
- Open the panel and browse Library
- Optional: enable online access, search a free source (e.g. Poly Haven), then Save to Library
- Import one asset into your scene
Cache vs library (important)
UAL uses two different folders:
- Cache — temporary download/staging and thumbnails. Safe to clear.
- Library — your permanent asset folders. Do not point cache and library at the same place.
If Health Check warns about paths, fix them before downloading more assets.
